Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father was a carnival barker, was killed as a young little girl. This forced her mother to support the family by being a waitress and cleaning woman. Ruth was born in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she attended school. But she quit school after just two years in order to explore a career in acting. This path was fraught with challenges. After landing a gig in New York as a model for a detective magazine, she had a difficult time trying to get opportunities for stage. The next position she was offered was the "hat check" lady at a club before she gave up and moved back to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as an actor who was steady. She earned money by working during the day as an usherette. She graduated with a diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
